Does a DWI Arrest Equal Alcoholism?

Does a DWI arrest mean the person arrested in an alcoholic? Let’s be honest; when we hear about someone being arrested for driving while impaired, we automatically assume they have a drinking problem. After all, if they didn’t, they wouldn’t have gotten arrested. But is this assumption correct? Does a DWI or DUI arrest equal alcoholism?

DWI Arrests and the State

According to About Health, when a person is arrested for drunk driving, most states assume they have a drinking problem. In fact, most states mandate an alcohol assessment coupled with education from a WTA course and treatment before restoring a driver’s road privileges.

Across our nation, the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) laws, are about the same. If a driver has a BAC of .08 or higher, they are considered intoxicated and charged accordingly. Most states, including North Carolina, require those convicted of drunk driving to undergo an assessment.

A DWI assessment is designed to determine the extent of a person’s alcohol (or other impairing substance) consumption. The results of the evaluation can differentiate between a person who made a stupid and dangerous mistake versus an individual with a drinking problem.

Judgement Error vs. Alcoholic

We all make dumb decisions. It’s part of being human. For some, their DWI was the result of one dumb decision. Perhaps they were out drinking with friends. They felt fine, and they thought they were okay to drive. But they weren’t. When pulled over or stopped at a checkpoint, a breathalyzer test revealed a BAC of .08 or higher.

For others, their DWI was an entirely different scenario. They knew they’d had too much to drink. Maybe they even drank heavily often and drove home via back roads in an attempt to avoid the authorities or a possible accident. It’s individuals like these who often have a drinking problem.

DWI Assessments and Education

The law treats all motorists equally. If a driver’s blood alcohol level is over the legal limit, they will be charged with driving under the influence. Regardless of whether the incident was an honest mistake or the tip of a bigger iceberg, the driver will be required to undergo a DWI assessment, alcohol education, and possibly extended treatment.

It’s important to choose a DWI service provider capable of providing a proper assessment. Service providers must be non-judgmental and without bias. They must be able and ready to handle every assessment and subsequent education course professionally and courteously.
